Hair

The hormone primarily responsible for hair growth in men (and women) on the scalp is testosterone, but it’s more specifically related to a derivative of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Here’s how it works:

1. Testosterone: Testosterone is a male sex hormone produced in the testes (and in smaller amounts in women’s ovaries and men’s adrenal glands). It plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics, including body hair.

2. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT): DHT is produced when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into DHT. DHT is more potent than testosterone and has a significant influence on hair follicles.

While testosterone is necessary for the development of body and facial hair during puberty, DHT is closely linked to male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). In individuals genetically predisposed to hair loss, DHT can shrink hair follicles over time, leading to thinning hair and eventual hair loss.

Treatment options for hair growth often focus on blocking the effects of DHT or promoting hair follicle health. Medications like finasteride and minoxidil are commonly used to combat male pattern baldness by either reducing DHT production or stimulating hair follicles to grow.

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of these treatments varies from person to person, and consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended to discuss options tailored to individual needs.
